Tune of the day #140: A Tribe Called Quest – Get a Hold

At the risk of pedalin’ cliches, like everyone else who grew up on 90’s and noughties Hip Hop, James Dewitt Yancey aka J Dilla changed my perspective on what music could be.

I’m not going to mansplain his career/achievements. I’ll simply say as a drummer, a DJ and a music fanatic he was the only artist of my generation that encompassed my love of wonky rhythms, mad sound effects and deep digging. Like Al Jackson Jr or Bernard Purdie, he had a groove all of his own and tragically his time on earth was cut way too short.

As so much of his music and sampling has dictated my tastes over my life, I thought it would be nice to run a tune of the day this week in honour of his productions and my personal favourites of those.

Here’s a banger from 1996’s ‘Beats, Rhymes and Life’ LP by ATCQ featuring a boss sample of Psyche-pop dondaddas the Cyrkle.
